It is asked of his readers as well. Unlike most of us, John, while growing up, did not rebel so much against his parents, whom he loved dearly, as he did against a narrow, provincial social environment; Salinas, and what it stood for to him emotionally, gradually became part of his geographical metaphor. Characteristics of the white middle class in Salinas and the surrounding area, as we see in many of the stories in The Long Valley, are tidy gardens and farms, carefully maintained, enclosed, and uniform.

He comes to school already with a love of books, thanks to a household where books are important and his parents and older sisters read to him. This sets Steinbeck’s lifelong love of reading: “I guess there are never enough books,” he writes years later. As a child, he is introduced to the Bible, which will have a profound impact on his writing style. Other important works include Paradise Lost, Pilgrim’s Progress, the works of Romantic writers such as Walter Scott, the works of Shakespeare, and Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur.

Adding Steinbeck’s name to the prestigious Greenwood literary encyclopedias puts the author on the shelf next to such writers as William Faulkner and Henry James. Not long after I signed the contract, one of the foremost Steinbeck critics, Warren French, wrote me a kind letter with the caution that I had no idea what I was getting into. I had some idea—I knew that Jackson J. Benson’s wonderful biography of Steinbeck had taken thirteen years to complete. Yet I was an assistant professor of English at the time, full of enthusiasm, and ready to knock out this book in two or three years.
